These are some of our most frequently asked questions. Today we’ll explain para-gel and fill-in in simple, easy-to-understand terms.
What Is Para-gel?
Para-gel is a type of gel nail that does not require filing down the natural nail surface before application.
With regular gel nails, the nail surface is lightly sanded (called “sanding”) before the gel is applied, to help it adhere. Repeated sanding gradually thins the natural nail over time.
Para-gel, on the other hand, adheres without sanding — which means your nails are less likely to become thin even with regular gel nail appointments.
Para-gel Is Recommended If You:
- Feel your nails are thin or prone to breaking
- Have been getting gel nails for a while and noticed weakening
- Want to keep enjoying nails while maintaining nail health
- Are trying gel nails for the first time
What Is Fill-in?
Fill-in is a technique where only the newly grown root area is refilled, rather than removing all the gel and starting fresh.
With regular gel nail changes, the gel is fully dissolved with acetone remover before a new coat is applied. This acetone can stress the nails and surrounding skin over time.
Fill-in removes only the lifted portion near the roots, then layers new gel over the remaining existing gel — so you can change your nail design without using acetone.
Fill-in Is Recommended If You:
- Experience dry or irritated skin from acetone
- Want longer-lasting nails
- Want to minimize stress on your nails
Para-gel vs Fill-in: What’s the Difference?
These two are often confused, but they’re actually different concepts.
